** The ISU and the WSC 2012 volunteer committee have teamed up to offer international students a unique Scandavian experience **

From the WSC team…Without volunteers there would be no WSC2012. From January 31st till February 21nd we will be needing help to build and tear down the arena, sell tickets, take care of the audience, serve food, accreditation, transport and handling the warehouse. You can work as much as you like, although we demand that you work at least three shifts during the event (February 12th – 19th) or four shifts before or after. You will in return receive access to all of the competitions, food when at work and last but not least an unforgettable experience with lots of new friends!’

ISU invites you to a lecture by John Samuel

John Samuel has been a human rights activist, policy researcher, writer, institution-builder and development manager for more than 20 years. He has been working with social movements, human rights and advocacy organisations and development organisations at the grassroots, national and international levels.

He has initiated and promoted national and international campaigns for human rights, accountable governance and social justice, including the Rights to Information in India and the Global Call to Action Against Poverty. He was formerly the Executive Director of the National Centre for Adovocacy

Studies. He has helped to establish more than ten organisations and networks at the national and international level, including the Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability, Social Watch India, Asia Media Forum and CCDS.

Review:

ISU staged a multi-cultural dinner on Thursday the 27th October. The dinner was aimed at promoting the individuality of all the different cultures and students currently studying at HIOA…

…The night was a great success, taking place in the St. Hanshaugen common room. And of course, music and refreshments were provided by the ISU….

…we were privileged enough to have traditional meals from all over the world….

…Including India, Greece, Germany, The Netherlands…

…Norway, Italy, Spain and many more!…

…Thank you to all who took part and a special thanks to all the students who cooked…the food was awesome!!…

ISU invites you to a back2back Tarantino/Rodriguez movie marathon

That’s right….we’re screening the Tarantino-Rodriguez double feature epic. Featuring Grindhouse and Planet Terror

When: 8th November, 18:00-22:00

Death Proof is a 2007 American action thriller film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film centres on a psychopathic stunt man who stalks young women before murdering them in staged car accidents using his “death-proof” stunt car. The film pays homage to exploitation, muscle cars, and slasher film genres of the 1970s, and stars Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd, Rose McGowan, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Zoë Bell as herself.

Planet Terror is a 2007 American action horror film written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, about a group of people attempting to survive an onslaught of zombie-like creatures as they feud with a military unit, including a go-go dancer searching for a way to use her “useless talents.” The film, a tribute to the zombie film genre, stars Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodriguez, Josh Brolin, Marley Shelton, Naveen Andrews, Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Stacy Ferguson and Bruce Willis.

A bit about the film…In adapting a very personal account of one man’s voyage across South America, Brazilian director Walter Salles has mapped out his own captivating portrait of a continent filled with contrast.

The Motorcycle Diaries is taken from the now legendary diary of Ernesto “Che” Guevara: self-proclaimed hero of the revolution, martyr and the convenient face of rebellion adorned across walls in student flats the world over. The man’s legacy is assured: after helping Fidel Castro drive the Americans into the sea (or at least into Guantanamo Bay) he met his end taking the revolution into the heart of south America where he was assassinated by the CIA in the Bolivian jungle. It may seem like his evocative life story, an ever lasting symbol of one-nil to the little guy, resonates more today than ever before but how much do we really know about the man behind the mythology? Salles’ film offers something of an insight.

A bit about the director…

Director, Walter Salles burst into global cinematic consciousness in 1998 with his second feature film, Central Station, an unflinching yet empathetic examination of humanity’s capability for good and bad set in his native Brazil. The film garnered overwhelming kudos from critics and was showered with awards, including several Oscar notations.

ISU invites you to a film screening of Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski’s controversial short film ‘A Short Film About killing’

A bit about the movie….Originally banned from being showed in North America, The fifth part of the highly celebrated Polish ten-part series “The Decalogue” (Dekalog), reflecting over The Ten Commandments of The Bible, this is also the only episode which takes an explicit political stance, focusing on two hideous murders, one illegal, the other one legal. Later expanded and released on cinema as “A Short Film About Killing”, director Krzysztof Kieślowski here gets his (not so positive) say about capital punishment.

It has won the Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the prize for Best Film at the European Film Awards….a definite MUST SEE!!

The director…

Polish film director Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941-1996) is considered one of his country’s most important filmmakers. He began his career in the 1960s making politically subversive documentaries under Poland’s Communist regime. He began directing feature films in the 1970s and first gained international recognition with his 1979 film “Camera Buff”.

Kieslowski earned even greater renown in the 1980s for A Short Film about Love and A Short Film about Killing, both adapted from his ten-hour Polish television series The Decalogue. His subsequent releases, Blue, White, and Red, comprising the early-1990s “Three Colors” trilogy, stand as his most highly acclaimed works. Kieslowski shocked the film world when he announced his retirement following the release of Red. He had little time to enjoy his newfound leisure, however; he died following heart bypass surgery, on March 13, 1996.

About the director:

Stalin K. is a media and human rights activist. He is a teacher, trainer and an internationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker. He is India’s leading exponent of community radio, campaign design and community video. He currently leads Video Volunteers (www.videovolunteers.org), an international organization dedicated to empowering community voices by setting up media projects around the world. As part of Video Volunteers, he has set up more than 15 community video units in India and Brazil.

City kids in Burkina Faso think they’ve spotted Osama bin Laden. A deaf Frenchwoman in Manhattan writes a Dear John letter to a man who has left that morning for work at the World Trade Center. A mother endures more than her son’s death. And that is just some of the stories presented in “11’09″01 September 11″, an international film composed of 11 contributions from different filmmakers, each from a different country. Each gives their own vision of the events in New York City on September 11, 2001, in a short film of 11 minutes, 9 seconds, and one frame.

About some of the directors:

Samira Makhmalbaf is an internationally acclaimed Iranian filmmaker and script writer, and belongs to the New Wave movement within Iranian cinema.

Claude Lelouch is a French filmmaker who have been making films since the early 1960s, winning the Palme d’Or for “Un homme et une femme” at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival.

Youssef Chahine was a critically acclaimed Egyptian filmmaker, credited with launching the career of actor Omar Sharif (“Dr. Zhivago”).

Danis Tanovic is a Bosnian filmmaker, best known for having directed and written the script for the 2001 Bosnian movie “No Man’s Land” which won an Academy Award.

Ken Loach is an English film and television director, known for his naturalistic, social realist directing style and for his socialist beliefs.

Make the traditional dessert from your country or just something you like and you want us to try. Come to taste desserts from different countries! It can be sweet, salty, bitter or sour – feel free with your tastes and fantasy:-)

Or if you don’t feel like cooking or baking anything, you can bring some fruits that we maybe don’t even know how to eat…

If you have some expenses related to food it will be reimbursed. (You can spend up to 40 NOK per person and the limit of total amount that can be reimbursed to you is 200 NOK)

Don’t forget to bring the receipts!
