About finding job in Oslo:
It is our pleasure to share some real life job-hunting tips with international students since all of us are more or less ‘in the same boat’. Since some of us came to Norway before you, there is surely some info that we can provide you. It will not give you all the solutions but we really hope it gives you a relevant push.
There ARE job opportunities for students, but they are not very easy to find and most places require the knowledge of Norwegian.
We strongly advice to participate in the informational meeting that the Oslo University College organizes for you about how to search for jobs or visit Carrier Center at OUC where you could get more tips on the job-hunt odyssey.
Please, be aware that as a student, you have the right to work up to 20 hrs a week.
Tips we can share with you:
- Learn Norwegian language and do it fast. You need it!
- Whatever is your experience of work before (sales, computers, waitress, cleaning, etc) put it on your CV and visit every store or company that might hire you and deliver your CV personally, face-to-face job search is known to be the best method here.
- Be aware of the up-coming summer jobs, to get them you have to start looking early (February-March-April).
- You can also check the Norwegian websites or companies where positions and vacancies are posted. Then use google translator (http://translate.google.com) in order to get the main idea and still apply. Check out the important words to know in relation to the job market in the table bellow.
Where to look:
- If you don’t mind waking up early plus working on Sundays distributing newspapers, register at: http://avisbud.aftenposten.no/GetApplicationFirstPage.do
- There are many jobs posted on NAV – Norwegian Labor and Welfare Administration. Look in: http://www.nav.no/English On the right part it says "vacancies in English" check that EVERY week, apply with good motivation letter and personalized CV. It has a lot of focus on high-level positions that need proficiency in English. However, never underestimate your luck!
- OUC website: ( Job vacancies for students) www.hio.no/content/view/full/5674
- www.finn.no look in word "deltid stillinger" (part time jobs)
- www.stillinger.no is good since it has many ‘vikarbyrå’ under ‘vikartjenester’ that can lead you to many smaller companies that are easier to be reached online or face-to-face.
- www.jobz.no and www.jobzone.no can be other options.
- www.academicwork.no is good for students and young professionals seeking part-time or full-time jobs.
